At the beginning of every Sunday worship service, a member of the congregation steps forward to light a candle that sits in a simple, brass holder we call ‘The Chalice.’ We explain that it is our Unitarian Universalist symbol of ‘sacrifice, service, and love.’ How did this cup-shaped form become our faith’s symbol–shining in the constellation of religious icons along with the Christain cross, the Jewish star, and the Muslim crescent? (Teaser: there will be talk of martyrs and saints.) What path is it illuminating for us today? I hope you’ll join us Sunday for “Keep the Chalice Lit.” (And please remember to turn your clocks ahead for the return of Daylight Savings Time!)
