First Church in Boston is a democratic way of doing religion. We are a lay-led church, and we control our own destiny and prospects! Joining a board or committee is one way to get to know people and to get involved in every aspect of church life. We believe that all leadership groups are ministries, actively living out our free faith. Every member, working alongside ministers and staff, has many opportunities to have an effect, to guide the future course of the church, and to deepen their connections with others.
We hope you will join us in any of these ministries.
The governing body of the church is our Standing Committee—Policies and programs of the church are guided and supervised by this twelve member committee, elected by the congregation. Each member is elected for a three year term.
In addition to the twelve elected members, there is one ex-officio member, the Treasurer of the Society. Other regularly invited attendees are the Senior Minister, the Associate Minister, the Director of Programs and Communications, the Administrator, the Youth Representative and the Chairperson of the Trustees.
The Standing Committee sets the policies and oversees the operations of the church, including worship and outreach.
Nominating
The six members of the Nominating Committee are elected by the congregation.
The Nominating Committee develops and presents to the members of the Society at its Annual Meeting, a slate of candidates for the offices of Treasurer and Clerk, the three elected committees and the delegates to the U.U.A. General Assembly.
Membership
The six members of the Membership Committee are elected by the congregation. The Membership Committee works to build the membership of the Society, to assist new members in becoming active participants in the church and to encourage the continuing participation of all members in the church community.
