Interweave

Here at First Church in Boston we celebrate diversity, not only in our congregation, but also within the community as a whole.  No matter what your sexual orientation, color, race, religion, economic standing are, we are here to welcome you.  We accomplish this through great programs, trainings, social events and community activism all in support of the first three principles of Unitarian Universalism.

1.  The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
2.  Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
3.  Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations.

Interweave is a continental Unitarian Universalist organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender concerns.  Interweave at First Church seeks to broaden the congregation’s understanding of bi-Sexual, gay, lesbian and transgender (BGLT) issues.  We meet frequently to organize various social events and diversity trainings.  We also work closely with the Social Justice Committee to show our support of the many diversity issues that are outside our church.  Two of the issues we are currently focused on are, the support of gay marriage, and people living with AIDS.  First Church Senior Minister, Rev. Stephen Kendrick performed the church’s first legal gay marriages in May 2004, three days after it became legal here in MA.  We not only like to tackle the hard issues, but we also have fun.  We march in the annual Gay Pride Parade, go on social outings, organize various activities within the church and even protest at the state house when needed.  All this gives us not only a more accepting community, but a fun one as well.

If you would like to join us at one of our gatherings please email Ruth Owen at or call the church for more information.
