Children and Youth

Dear Parents,

We welcome you and your children into the religious education program here at First Church in Boston. We are a warm, caring active community. Our religious education program is fun, flexible and child-centered.

All of our programs share these goals:

  • That our children and youth will be able to articulate the Principles of Unitarian Universalism and be able to apply them in their lives.
  • That our children and youth will be familiar with the sources of Unitarian Universalism, particularly Christian and Jewish scripture and the humanist tradition.
  • That our children and youth engage in and learn from the work of justice making in the world.
  • That our children and youth have a religious home here, with worship opportunities for them and their families that celebrate their spirituality.
  • That our children and youth be embraced and nurtured by the wider congregation so they may grow up as committed Unitarian Universalists and carry their faith with them into the world.

Our guiding principles in implementing our goals are:

  • Children and youth are individuals and their differences are to be respected and celebrated.
  • All children and youth are important and deserve to be heard.
  • As much as possible our religious education program is governed by the democratic process and gives children and youth as much responsibility as they can handle, within a structured framework.
  • Parents are children’s primary religious educators and religious education takes place in many settings and situations.

The program is designed to support and fit into family life by being adaptable to many different schedules and circumstances.

We look forward to welcoming your family to First Church in Boston. If you would like to sign up for our weekly email newsletter specifically about children’s religious education please send an email to Ruth Owen.

In faith,
Ruth Owen
