Music

Music is a very important part of the life of First Church. From Sunday morning worship with our professional and volunteer choirs to concerts, the Sanctuary and Chapel sing out as witness to the glory of creation. We believe that music is a vehicle to a greater spirituality, and we encourage all church members to participate in the musical offerings at First Church.

Music at First Church is under the direction of Dr. Paul Cienniwa. The Sanctuary features a 3-manual, 64-stop mechanical action Casavant organ (1972, Op. 3140) and a Steinway piano. The Hale Chapel also has a Steinway piano and a single-manual, 8-stop mechanical action Casavant organ (1972, Op. 3129).

The First Church Choir, a professional 13-voice ensemble, sings for Sunday services. Members of the congregation are encouraged to participate in the church’s three volunteer ensembles, the Singing Society, the Ringing Society and the Children’s Singing Society. During the summer, services are held in the air-conditioned Hale Chapel, and music is provided by guest singers and instrumentalists.

Renowned for its acoustics, the church hosts numerous concerts throughout the year. Recent performers include Tegan and Sara, the Boston Camerata and the Boston Children’s Chorus.
