"Deeper Hungers"

"This will be Walk for Hunger day in Boston, and I always feel a little weird--I am thrilled that the streets are filled with idealistic people showing that they truly care about the needs of others--and I am a little put out that, for us folks wanting to get to church, that the streets are filled with idealistic people...Well, you get it. It will be a little harder to get to church, so pay attention to road closings and such--and be aware that if you are walking for this great cause, you have an automatic built-in golden excuse to miss church!

But the word 'hunger' really snagged at me, and so I have decided to preach about those "Deeper Hungers" that sometimes fuel our lives--real and hard addictions, and the softer kind of quiet hungers that also, while not on the level of alcoholism or drug addiction, still effect our happiness and effectiveness. I am not a doctor or any kind of authority, but after more than 30 years as a minister, I have learned (and experienced) a lot about such hungers within the human heart."
