A UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FESTIVAL SERVICE

Stephen writes..."These words, in Latin, were last whispered words from the great poet Seamus Heaney to his family when he died last year, and they mean, "Do not fear." I preached on fear last year, and here I am, doing it again. Lots of people have expressed to me some sense of anxiety and apprehension as we face the future, and it makes sense that I address that in the light of the Christmas story, which is full both of wonderment and fear, as lived by the protagonists and by the message of angels. Try as we may, the actual birth narrative expressed in Christmas isn't really sweet and sentimental--it is a pretty tough and interesting tale, and it still speaks, even to good old religious liberals such as ourselves.

And plus, singing the carols will do us a world of good...

See you in church, Stephen"
