"One of the great traditions in the life of First Church is that we get to host an unusual interfaith service at the beginning of each year. Part of what makes it creative for me is that I do not select the topic of each year's celebration--but I do have the honor (most years) of tackling the theme selected by the joint committee of folks from Boston, England, and Boston, USA. Our forebears hit the coast of the Massachusetts Bay with incredible idealism, energy, and not a whole lot of knowledge of how to survive. They had to learn fast. It seems that what they learned, for good and ill, has strong applications to life today.
